Incontro Marc Labelle per la terza volta. Sì, amiamo – amo – i Dirty Honey, e non avrei perso l’occasione di essere aggiornata sui loro ultimi movimenti, così quando l’ufficio stampa europeo ha chiamato, ero pronta. Gli chiedo se si ricorda della nostra precedente conversazione, scommetto di no, ma sì! Ci siamo incontrati a Pistoia, alle porte di Firenze, sì! Quest’anno, il 12 giugno, suoneranno proprio a Firenze, aprendo l’edizione 2025 del grande festival Firenze Rocks, probabilmente davanti a 50.000 persone, quando i Guns N’ Roses saranno headliner. Quando ho sentito la notizia, immaginavo che fosse molto felice, dato che in precedenza mi aveva detto che era uno dei suoi più grandi sogni suonare lì, visto il suo amore per questa città. Sì, non vedo l’ora. Sarà fantastico. Sono stato in città qualche mese fa per una vacanza, ma tornare a suonare è fantastico, fantastico. È sicuramente una cosa che ho chiesto al nostro agente perché sapevo che i Guns N’ Roses avrebbero suonato lì e abbiamo fatto un sacco di cose con loro, il che è sempre una bella combinazione. E ovviamente essere lì anche con i Rival Sons è davvero una figata, ma onestamente è quello che chiamiamo il momento del cerchio completo. Per me è un sogno che si avvera, quando ero studente a Firenze suonavo nei bar e per strada facendo il busker, e ora suonare al più grande festival rock della città è un momento davvero bello per me. Sarà il mio secondo viaggio a Firenze quest’anno. Ho letto in un’intervista su una rivista britannica che il suo sogno è avere tre case, una a New York, una a Los Angeles e una a Firenze. Forse un giorno ne avrò una anch’io. Mi mandano su Instagram tutti gli annunci di immobili in Toscana… Cavolo, sembra bello. Sarebbe bello tornare a vivere lì, magari un giorno…
Abbiamo recensito tutti i precedenti tour dei Dirty Honey in Italia, e naturalmente gli album. Gli chiedo dell’ultimo album “Mayhem and Revelry Live” (la nostra recensione), un album dal vivo, che contiene anche alcuni brani registrati a Milano nel marzo 2024 (il nostro report). Gli dico quanto i fan italiani abbiano apprezzato la scelta. Quello di Milano è stato un grande show, ovviamente. E credo che, nel farlo, volessimo includere nell’album il maggior numero possibile di città e Paesi, sicuramente quelli in cui gli spettacoli sono stati davvero buoni, e a Milano è stato grande, come a Madrid, Barcellona e Parigi. È una cosa difficile perché credo che, come ascoltatore, si possa sentire l’energia di una grande folla attraverso l’audio dello spettacolo. Ma per noi l’ascolto è diverso, sai? Abbiamo suonato bene quella sera? Ho cantato bene quella sera? E c’era l’energia del pubblico? Quindi ci sono state molte cose che hanno influito, e conosco molto bene quello spettacolo di Milano perché abbiamo filmato anche quella sera. Spero che venga pubblicato. È stato sicuramente un grande spettacolo e ovviamente è entrato a far parte del disco.
Mi è stato detto che nello show di Milano Marc era particolarmente scatenato e faceva crowdsurfing in tutto il locale, così gli ho chiesto come facesse a cantare così bene mentre saltava dappertutto. Voglio dire, devi essere in buona forma per farlo. È una cosa di cui siamo tutti molto orgogliosi: non solo suonare bene le canzoni, ma anche eseguirle. Sono due elementi diversi di uno spettacolo dal vivo e riuscire a farli entrambi è molto importante, così come è importante farlo al 100% dal vivo. Ci vuole molta pratica e molta abitudine, e noi non siamo estranei all’idea di andare in contatto fisico con ill pubblico. È quello che ci piace fare e mantenere l’emozione. È importante anche mantenere una certa qualità a cui siamo abituati. Quindi grazie. È ovviamente un bel complimento.
Penso che i loro album in studio suonano dal vivo e che dal vivo i brani suonano come in studio. Significa essere professionali, concentrati, avere obiettivi chiari. Ma c’è di più. È una firma dei Dirty Honey. Grazie. È… Voglio dire, è sicuramente un’energia (lo dice in italiano), giusto? È speciale avere quel rapporto con lo studio e con lo spettacolo dal vivo in cui si cerca di catturare una certa energia. È qualcosa di cui siamo molto consapevoli sia in studio che sul palco. I gruppi rock sono diversi da quelli acustici o dalle popstar. Quando ci sono quattro personalità diverse che si uniscono, si crea un’energia completamente unica. E noi capiamo che è per questo che piacciamo alla gente, che piace la nostra energia, che è ciò da cui la gente è attratta. Quindi, essere in grado di catturare questo aspetto sia in studio che dal vivo è qualcosa che stiamo ovviamente cercando di capire di noi stessi e di ricreare il più possibile.
Seguendo i Dirty Honey fin dall’inizio, ho l’impressione che il legame professionale tra loro sia in costante aumento. Penso che ci voglia un certo periodo di tempo per diventare un artista sempre più esperto in tournée. Tutti i miei gruppi preferiti ci sono passati. C’è un momento a metà strada, che si tratti degli Aerosmith, degli ACDC o dei Rolling Stones, in cui una volta raggiunto un certo numero di anni di tournée, raggiungono un livello di qualità davvero elevato. Non importa se si tratta di cinque settimane di tour, di un anno di tour mondiale o di qualsiasi altra cosa, c’è un certo ritmo in cui riescono a dare il meglio di sé ogni singola sera. E penso che sarà difficile al Firenze Rocks perché sarà il primo concerto del tour, ma faremo in modo di portare di nuovo la qualità in Italia! Sarà anche il primo concerto di questo tour.
I Dirty Honey suonano Hard Rock classico, come nessuno è più in grado di fare. Sono hard rocker così energici, ma non hanno lo stigma dei vecchi rocker classici, al contrario sembrano “sani”, senza bere pesantemente, senza droghe. Solo Rock and Roll. Hanno una personalità unica, come band e come singoli musicisti. Credo che questo si ricolleghi a ciò che dicevo a proposito del fatto che quattro personalità uniche creeranno sempre qualcosa di nuovo. Se non si cerca di essere i Led Zeppelin o i Guns N’ Roses, credo che inevitabilmente si creerà qualcosa di fresco e unico. E, sai, per quanto John possa volerlo, a volte non può suonare esattamente come Slash. Io non posso cantare esattamente come Axl. Ho troppe influenze personali e ovviamente Axl Rose è una di queste. Ma anche Steven Tyler e Chris Cornell e Mick Jagger e Tom Petty e Brian Adams. Amo tutti questi cantanti, Chris Robinson e Sam Cooke, e in qualche modo sono tutti nella mia voce per aver cantato tutte quelle canzoni per tutti questi anni. Quindi penso che, pur essendoci qualità di tutti questi artisti in me, sto creando qualcosa di completamente nuovo. E credo che se chiedeste a Chris Robinson, vi direbbe “Amo Otis Redding e Bon Scott”, e anche lui ha queste qualità. Ma è sempre lui. Mescolare Otis Redding e Bon Scott è unico di per sé. Per quanto riguarda il nostro essere in qualche modo normali, credo che stiamo solo tenendo conto degli errori commessi dai nostri eroi e cercando di non ricrearli o rifarli noi stessi, perché la longevità è qualcosa che mi sta molto a cuore quando parlo del successo di altri musicisti. Ho una grande ammirazione per Steven Tyler, credo che sia riuscito a raggiungere il successo anche in età avanzata. Sammy Hagar, per esempio, lo fa ancora ad un livello molto alto. Voglio dire, questi ragazzi hanno quasi 80 anni e continuano a farlo. Quindi devi prenderti cura di te stesso se vuoi continuare a farlo quando sarai così vecchio, perché non c’è momento migliore che stare sul palco con i tuoi amici, indipendentemente dall’età. Spero che avremo l’opportunità di farlo quando avrò 70, 80 anni. Vedremo, dovrò aspettare altri 50 anni o giù di lì!
I Dirty Honey non rappresentano la fortuna, ma il duro lavoro e la visione. Sono molto concentrati, nonostante la giovane età. Sanno dove vogliono arrivare e la musica che vogliono suonare, a modo loro. Chiedo quindi a Marc di parlare della futura musica, stanno già componendo un nuovo album in studio? Oh, sì, è sicuramente in arrivo. Sono costantemente impegnato, sai, a scrivere e a fare demo di nuova musica. È qualcosa che arriverà nel prossimo futuro, un nuovo disco in studio. Ho parlato con Mitch (il loro manager) e con l’altro nostro assistente, Christian, che ci sta aiutando a produrre altri contenuti per YouTube e cose del genere. Sta andando molto bene. Abbiamo un sacco di cose in arrivo. Speriamo di poterlo pubblicare per Natale o subito dopo.
Chiedo se torneranno in Australia per il nuovo disco. No, credo che sia stata l’ultima volta che siamo andati in Australia a registrare. Probabilmente faremo qualcosa negli Stati Uniti, magari a Joshua Tree o a Los Angeles. Chi lo sa? Vedremo. Non abbiamo ancora deciso. Ho sentito che a Firenze c’è un ottimo studio gestito da Rick Rubin. Quindi forse la prossima volta vorrei affidarmi a lui. Le canzoni sono quasi pronte, ma dobbiamo ancora trovare un produttore. Ovviamente stiamo continuando a fare demo. Ma ci sono alcune canzoni che pensiamo siano pronte per essere suonate dal vivo in questo tour. Probabilmente non ne faremo nessuna al Firenze Rocks perché non siamo headliner e quindi suoneremo un set più breve. Ma quando saremo headliner durante questo tour europeo, sono sicuro che suoneremo del materiale nuovo di cui siamo entusiasti. È questo che ci piace fare. Ci piace suonare le nuove canzoni prima che escano, assolutamente. Ricordo che abbiamo suonato “Won’t Take Me Alive” a Milano prima che uscisse. Abbiamo suonato molto “The Wire” prima che uscisse, è un buon modo per testare se le canzoni sono buone o meno con il pubblico dal vivo. Quindi è sicuramente qualcosa che ci piace fare. Non hanno paura di esporsi. Questo fa molto Dirty Honey. No, per niente. Se avete visto il documentario che abbiamo pubblicato, no, non lo siamo. Non abbiamo paura di guardare dietro le quinte.
Il mio tempo con Marc sta per finire, la mia ultima domanda riguarda il merchandising, ne troveremo alla prossima mostra italiana? L’ultima volta non era rimasto molto. Sì, avremo sicuramente del merch con roba nuova allo show. L’Italia è un mercato difficile perché le tasse sulla vendita del merchandising sono molto alte, il governo si prende il 40% o giù di lì di IVA.
Quindi iniziano questo nuovo tour europeo a Firenze, e indovina un po’? Il giorno dopo saranno già nel Regno Unito al Download Festival! (In fondo all’articolo tutte le date del tour).
Dirty Honey interview
I’m meeting Marc Labelle for the third time. Yes, we love – I love – Dirty Honey, I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to be updated about their last movements, so when the European press office called, I was ready. I ask him if he remembers our previous conversation, betting not, but yes! We’ve met in Pistoia, just outside of Florence, yeah! This year, on June 12th, they are going to play right in Florence, opening the 2025 edition of the huge rock festival Firenze Rocks, probably in front of 50.000 people, when Guns N’ Roses are headlining. When I heard the news, I imagined he was very very happy, since he previously told me it was one of his biggest dreams, due to his love for this city. Yeah, I can’t wait. It’s gonna be awesome. I was just there in town a few months ago on vacation, but coming back to play, it’s awesome, awesome. It’s definitely something, I reached out to our agent about because obviously I knew Guns N’ Roses was playing there and we’ve done a lot of stuff with them, which is always a nice match. And obviously to be there with Rival Sons too, it’s, it’s really cool, but honestly, it’s what we call a full circle moment. For me, it’s a dream come true, I used to play at bars and on the street in Florence busking when I was there as a student, and now to play the biggest rock festival that the city has it’s a really cool moment for me. So it’ll be my second trip to Florence already this year. I’ve read it in an interview in a British magazine that it’s his dream to have three houses, one in New York, one in LA and one in Florence. Maybe one day I’ll have one. I get sent on Instagram all the Tuscany real estates advertisements … Man, that looks nice. It’d be nice to live there again, maybe someday.
We’ve reviewed all previous Dirty Honey tours in Italy, and albums of course. I ask him about the last album “Mayhem and Revelry Live” (our review), a live one, which contains also some songs recorded in Milan on March 2024 (our report). I tell him how much Italian fans have appreciated the choice. That Milan show was a great show, obviously. And I think going into it, we wanted to include in the album as many cities and countries as possible, certainly the ones where the shows were really good, and Milan was a great, as Madrid and Barcelona and Paris where. It’s a tricky thing because I think, as a listener, you can feel the energy from a great crowd through the audio of the show. But, for us, we’re listening differently, you know? Did we play it well that night? Did I sing it well that night? And did we have the energy from the crowd? So there were a lot of things that went into it, and I’m very familiar with that Milan show because we filmed that night as well. Hopefully that’ll be coming out. That was definitively a great show, and obviously it became part of the record.
I was told he was particularly wild, crowd surfing through the whole venue in the Milan show, so I ask him how can he sing so well whilst jumping everywhere. I mean, you have to be in good shape to do that. It’s something we all take a lot of pride in is, is not only playing the songs well, but performing them. Those are two different elements of a live show and, and being able to do them both it’s really important and doing it fully 100% live is also important. It takes, takes a lot of practice and a lot of getting used to, and we’re no strangers to getting in the, the audiences right in their face. That’s what we like to do and keep it exciting. Also maintaining a certain quality that we’re used to, is important as well. So thank you though. That’s obviously a nice compliment.
I go on telling him that they sound live in their studio albums, and sound like studio when live. It means being professional, focused, have clear goals. But there’s more. It’s a Dirty Honey signature. Thank you. I mean, it’s, it’s definitely, an “energia”, right? It’s special to have that relationship with the studio and with live show where you’re trying to capture a certain energy. It’s something we’re very conscious of both in the studio and on the stage. Rock bands are different than, you know, acoustic acts, or pop stars. When you have four different personalities coming together, that creates an energy that is completely unique. And, you know, we understand that’s why people like us, they like our energy, that’s what people are drawn to and attracted to. So, being able to capture that both in the studio and in a live environment is something we’re obviously trying to understand about ourselves and, and recreate as much as possible.
Following Dirty Honey since the very start, I have the impression that the bondage amongst them is constantly increasing. I think there’s a certain amount of time as you become a more seasoned touring artist. All my favorite bands went through it. There’s a moment there right in the middle, whether it’s Aerosmith, ACDC, the Rolling Stones, like once they were a certain number of years into their touring life, they hit this stride that is just really good. It doesn’t matter whether it was five weeks into a tour, a year into a world tour, whatever, like there’s a certain rhythm that they hit where they’re just bringing it every single night. And I think it’s going to be tough at Firenze Rocks because it’ll be the first show of the tour, but we’ll make sure we bring the quality to Italy again! It’s going to be the first gig of this tour too.
Dirty Honey play Classic Hard Rock, like no one is able to do anymore. They are such energetic hard rockers. But they don’t have the old classic rockers’ stigma, on the contrary they look so healthy, no heavy drinking, no drugs. Just Rock and Roll. They have their own unique personality, as a band and as single musicians. I think that goes back to what I was saying about just four unique personalities will always create something new. If you’re not trying to be Led Zeppelin or Guns N’ Roses, I think inevitably you’re going to create something that’s fresh and unique. And, you know, as bad as John may want to, sometimes he can’t play exactly like Slash. I can’t sing exactly like Axl. I have too many influences of my own and of course, Axl Rose is one of them. But so is Steven Tyler and Chris Cornell and Mick Jagger and Tom Petty and Brian Adams. I love all those singers, Chris Robinson and Sam Cooke too, and they’re all in my voice somehow from singing all those songs all those years. So I think while there’s qualities of all those artists in me, it’s creating something completely new. And I think if you ask Chris Robinson, he would say “I love Otis Redding and Bon Scott”, and those are in him, too. But he’s still him. Mixing Otis Redding and Bon Scott is unique in and of itself. In terms of us being somewhat normal, I think we’re just taking into account the mistakes our heroes have made and trying not to recreate them or redo them ourselves, because longevity is something that I hold near and dear to my heart when I’m talking about success of other musicians. I really look up to Steven Tyler, I think he’s done it really well into his old age. Sammy Hagar, for instance, he’s still doing it at a very high level. I mean, these guys are pushing 80 years old almost and like they’re still doing it. And so you have to take care of yourself if you want to be doing it when you’re that old, because there isn’t a better time to be had than being on stage with your friends, no matter what your age is. It’s something I hope that we have the opportunity to do when I’m 70, 80 years old. We’ll see, I have to wait another 50 years or whatever!
Dirty Honey don’t represent luck, they represent hard work, and vision. They’re very focused, despite young age. They know where they want to go to, and the music they want to play, their own way. So I ask Marc about future new music, are they already composing a new studio album? Oh, yeah, that’s that’s coming for sure. I’m constantly, you know, writing and demoing new music. That’s something that’s coming in the near future, a new record in the studio. And I’m just I’ve been talking to Mitch (their manager) and our other assistant, Christian, who is helping us produce some more YouTube content and stuff like that. It’s going really well. We got a bunch of stuff coming. So hopefully, maybe for Christmas time or or just after.
I enquire if they are going back to Australia for the new record. No, I think I think that was the last time we were going to go to Australia to record. We’re probably going to do something Stateside, maybe Joshua Tree or just L.A. Who knows? We’ll see. We haven’t decided yet. I heard there’s a really good studio in Florence that Rick Rubin runs. So maybe next time I would like to trust it. The songs are almost ready, but we still have to find a producer. We have to obviously keep demoing songs. But there’s a bunch of them that think are ready to be played at live shows on this tour. We probably won’t do any at Firenze Rocks because we’re not headlining and therefore playing a shorter sort of set. But when we headline some shows throughout Europe during this tour, I’m sure we’re going to be playing some new stuff that we’re excited about. And that’s what we love to do. We love to play new songs before they’re out, totally. I remember we played “Won’t Take Me Alive” in Milan before it came out. We played. Yeah, we played. We played “The Wire” a lot before it came out, it’s a good way to test whether or not the songs are good with the live audience. So it’s definitely something we like to do. They are not afraid of exposing yourself. This is very Dirty Honey a lot. No, not at all. We if you saw the documentary we put out, no, we’re not. We’re not afraid to look behind the curtain.
My time with Marc is running out, my last question is about merchandising, are we going to find some at the next Italian show? Last time there wasn’t much left. Yeah, we’ll definitely have merch with new stuff at the show. Italy is tough because taxes are really high with selling merch, the government takes like 40 percent or something in VAT.
So they start this huge new European tour in Florence, and guess what? The day after they’ll be already in UK at the Download Festival!
