Il videoclip che non c’è: “Still Life”

Soggetti per videoclip mai realizzati: “Still Life” degli Iron Maiden dall’album “Piece Of Mind”

Continua il nostro progetto dedicato a soggetti per videoclip mai realizzati; stavolta tocca a “Still Life” degli Iron Maiden, sesta traccia dell’album “Piece Of Mind”.

È in piedi sull’argine dello stagno, immobile.

– una sedia-sdraio vuota;

– un secchiello rosso caduto sul bordo di una piscina azzurra;

– l’Uomo in costume da bagno, di spalle, che sta parlando al cellulare;

– la Donna scioglie una polverina nel tè del marito;

– la Donna fa lo stesso col vino della cena;

FINE FLASH-BACK.

The music video that never was:

“Still Life” – Iron Maiden (from the album “Piece Of Mind” – track 6)

During the opening voice-over, we see a car driving down a secluded road through a dense forest bursting with autumn colors.

The camera gradually zooms in on the car’s interior and, when the song begins, we see a man and a woman in their late 30s to early 40s inside.

He drives with a blank stare, as if the beauty surrounding him leaves him unmoved. She smiles, tries to talk, and points out the landscape they’re passing through, but he responds only timidly.

When the final curve leads to the clearing where the vacation home stands, even the man’s expression changes, filling with wonder.

They park a short distance from the wooden porch, get out of the car, and stand gazing at the large house nestled in the wilderness. Then something catches the Woman’s eye; she takes her husband’s hand and heads toward a cluster of large weeping willows.

Through the veil of water, partially covered with water lilies, we see the couple approaching the pond sheltered by the willows.

The Woman lets go of the Man’s hand and runs onto the small wooden pier, thrilled by this unexpected gift. The Man, torn by conflicting emotions, reaches the pier and embraces his wife.

Beneath the surface of the pond, for a fraction of a second, the silhouette of a skeletal face is glimpsed. Perhaps the face of a little girl.

As the Woman climbs the porch steps and opens the front door, the Man struggles to carry two large suitcases. They enter a spacious living area that includes an open kitchen and a staircase leading to the sleeping quarters.

The Man sets the suitcases down on the floor and, looking up at the staircase, sighs at the thought of having to carry them up to the second floor.

As the Woman is putting her clothes away in the bedroom closet, she spots her husband through the window. He is standing on the bank of the pond, motionless.
For the first time, she looks worried.

The Woman joins the Man, bringing him a steaming cup of tea. He thanks her and begins to sip the hot drink, staring at the water, lost in his thoughts. The Woman kisses him on the head and heads back inside.

That evening the couple dines and toasts cheerfully, perhaps a bit too much, judging by the many glasses of wine and their enthusiastic laughter. In their drunken trance, they kiss passionately; then the Woman begins to undress, scattering clothes along the staircase, and invites her husband to join her.

In total darkness, the face of a little girl appears, submerged in the water. She is whispering incomprehensible phrases. The Man struggles to swim toward that face, which, however, seems to be moving away, fading further and further into the darkness.

The man wakes up terrified and looks around, feeling disoriented. He gets out of bed, being careful not to wake his wife, and creeps downstairs.

In the darkness, shrouded in a thick mist, he sees a strange glow spreading from the pond. That supernatural hue bathes the water lilies in a shifting yellow-orange reflection, and the Man can’t help but approach, as if hypnotized. The surface of the water begins to shift, first rippling, then revealing the features of a little girl. The Man steps back, shaking his head. The face emerges completely, its eyes sunken and empty, its sparse hair like seaweed hanging from a skull. The grin on the rotting mouth murmurs a simple question, which appears as a subtitle: “Why?”

The Man turns to run away, but slips and falls to the ground, landing on his back between the dock and the embankment.

The Man opens his eyes again and sees his wife, tears in her eyes, shaking him and begging him to wake up.
The couple embraces in the first rays of dawn.

In the kitchen, the Woman is bustling back and forth, carrying cookies, pastries, and everything needed for a hearty breakfast. The Man is sipping milk, wrapped in a blanket, still shivering. She asks him for an explanation, but he brushes it off.

In the afternoon, they decide to take a walk in the woods to recharge. The hike along the trails, ablaze with fall colors, seems to instill a sense of renewed serenity in the couple.

The sun sets over the house in the woods, and in the darkness of the Man’s dreams, a series of rapid-fire flashbacks unfold:

– an empty deck chair;

– a red bucket lying on the edge of a blue swimming pool;

– the Man in a swimsuit, seen from behind, talking on his cell phone;

– the lifeless body of a little girl floating in the water.

That angelic face with blonde hair overlaps the skeletal face that is once again emerging from the surface of the pond. This time, the glow shifts to shades of green and purple, and those hues illuminate the Man weeping on the dock, who can only manage to murmur his repeated “No.”

The figure emerges fully, and other silhouettes of faces begin to surface around her. The little girl slowly raises her arm and points at the Man, then finishes with a word as small as it is relentless, which appears as a subtitle: “You.”
The Man covers his ears with his hands and begins to scream.
The other beings who have emerged also begin to advance, all with outstretched hands and accusing eyes.

Something changes: the Man is no longer surrounded only by darkness; the walls of the bedroom begin to emerge—rotten, oozing water. The wallpaper begins to warp, and from its cracks emerge fingers, arms, deformed faces, and water. The room begins to flood, but his wife seems oblivious, continuing to sleep. The moment the Man shakes her to wake her, the woman’s silhouette turns into a mass of putrid flesh that crumbles in his hands.

The Man wakes up in the sun-drenched bedroom. He’s still dressed as he was the day before, and his clothes are soaked, as are the blankets. He jumps up, screaming. His wife rushes into the room, trying to approach him, but he orders her to stay away and takes refuge in the bathroom. The Woman starts knocking on the door to no avail: the Man asks to be left alone.

The sunset brings black, rain-laden clouds.

The sound of branches banging against the window wakes the Woman, who realizes she’s alone in bed.

The Woman steps out into the torrential night; the glow leads her to the pond, where she finds her husband submerged up to his chest. The Man looks his wife straight in the eyes with an expression of absolute and terrifying serenity.
She screams, reaches out to him, and begs him to come back.
The Man smiles and turns his back on her. Ahead of him, beneath the veil of water, the little girl’s face is faintly visible. Then two childlike hands emerge, waiting to be taken.

The Woman sees her husband, alone, walking toward the open water of the pond, growing increasingly indistinct in the night.

The Man grasps the little girl’s hands and lets himself go, submerging completely into the pond.
Father and daughter embrace again in the greenish oblivion of water, mud, and algae, finally together once more.

Outside, on the dock, the Woman is on her knees, on all fours, her face bent toward the wood. When she lifts her head, she reveals a smile steeped in wicked triumph.
A series of quick FLASHBACKS reveal the truth:

– the Woman dissolves a powder into her husband’s tea;

– the Woman does the same with the wine at dinner;

– the Woman pretends to be asleep, but the moment her husband leaves the room, she opens her eyes, grabs her cell phone, and moves to the window.
END OF FLASHBACKS.

The Woman leans over the side of the pier and, reaching an arm beneath the surface of the wood, pulls out a miniature fiber-optic light display. She turns it off using an app on her cell phone, then selects a photo of her daughter. Moved to tears, she kisses her passionately, at the exact moment “Still Life” ends.

With no music playing, only the echo of the Woman’s footsteps on the pier as she heads home.
Just as she’s stepping onto the bank, a whisper sends a chill down her spine: “Mom…”.
The Woman, incredulous, turns around.
The pale, rotting arm of a little girl suddenly emerges from the water, grabs her ankle, and drags her into the pond.
Only then, as concentric circles and air bubbles gradually fade, giving way to the pond’s renewed stillness, does the final “Yeah” echo in the distance, bringing the track to a close.
