Il 12 marzo 2021 è uscito il quinto album della band Australiana The Paper Kites: “Roses” (qui la nostra recensione) è un disco composto interamente da duetti con voci femminili provenienti da ogni angolo del mondo, fino ad arrivare all’icona del Folk Rock australiano Julia Stone. Abbiamo scambiato qualche parola con il batterista Josh Bentley, che ha risposto alle nostre domande per aiutarci a conoscere meglio questo progetto.
Viviamo in un momento storico in cui ci siamo ormai abituati all’isolamento, questo album è stata una preziosa occasione di contatto e di collaborazione con molte altre artiste. Come è nata l’idea?
Siamo ancora dei grandi sostenitori del “disco” e spesso proviamo a concettualizzare idee e creatività nella nostra musica, quando cominciamo a lavorare su un nuovo album. Il nostro cantante Sam aveva scritto un sacco di canzoni per il nostro nuovo disco, ma sentiva che si prestavano a duetti con voci femminili. Stava scrivendo i testi e le melodie con in testa le cantanti che abbiamo sperato avrebbero fatto parte del processo di registrazione.
Mentre eravamo in tour in Europa nel 2019 abbiamo buttato giù una lista di cantanti donne da sogno che amavamo e rispettavamo e che pensavamo avrebbero funzionato bene con alcune canzoni del nuovo disco, le abbiamo contattate e abbiamo chiesto loro se volevano fare parte di questo progetto. Non eravamo sicuri che sarebbe stato possibile realizzare l’album a causa dell’emergenza Covid19 e la sfida di un disco collaborativo era un territorio inesplorato per noi.
Abbiamo registrato tutti gli strumenti a Melbourne nello studio del nostro produttore Tom Iansek; a causa delle limitazioni sul numero delle persone consentite all’interno, abbiamo dovuto andare in studio a turno per registrare le varie parti. La maggior parte delle voci sono state fatte a distanza, in home studio, e poi aggiunte in ogni sessione per il missaggio.
La natura collaborativa dell’album era una cosa che non avevamo mai fatto prima, ma siamo molto felici di aver contattato queste artiste e che abbiano cantato con noi. È stato un onore creare con tutte loro.
Da dove nasce il titolo “Roses”?
Il concetto alla base del titolo dell’album “Roses” era quello di riconoscere queste diverse artiste provenienti da tutto il mondo, ognuno di loro capace di diffondere bellezza, a modo proprio. L’album ha una romantica atmosfera notturna e l’idea e l’immagine di una misteriosa rosa rossa sembrava risuonare e catturare l’essenza del disco.
Come avete fatto a scegliere le artiste con cui collaborare? Le conoscevate già?
Nel 2019 abbiamo iniziato a lavorare su questo disco, con l’idea di trovare dieci artiste e creare un album di duetti. Mentre eravamo in tour in Polonia ci siamo radunati in una sala riunioni dell’hotel, ci siamo seduti intorno a un grande tavolo e abbiamo cominciato a fantasticare sulle musiciste con cui ci sarebbe piaciuto lavorare e sulle voci che sarebbero state più adatte per ogni canzone. Abbiamo scelto intenzionalmente prima di tutto artiste che amavamo e poi abbiamo ristretto il campo a chi avrebbe potuto essere più adatto per ogni brano. Si trattava allora di contattare ognuna di loro, nella speranza che fosse interessata a prestare la propria voce al progetto.
Ci ha aiutato conoscere già alcune di queste musiciste, prima di chiedere loro di essere coinvolte nel progetto. Conosciamo l’artista neozelandese Lydia Cole da molti anni e avevamo già avuto a che fare con alcune delle altre incredibili cantanti mentre eravamo in tour, nel corso degli anni. Ognuna di loro è stata scelta perché possiede la capacità unica di non limitarsi solo a cantare, ma di riuscire a emozionare con la propria voce.
Avete sempre avuto un’intensa attività live e avete viaggiato molto in tanti paesi diversi; sappiamo tutti che questo è stato un anno davvero complicato per la musica dal vivo, come state vivendo questo momento? Avete in programma date future?
Nel corso degli anni siamo stati estremamente fortunati a essere stati in grado di girare e suonare musica in molte parti del mondo. Per lo più abbiamo trascorso gli ultimi dodici mesi registrando “Roses” nella nostra città natale, Melbourne, e provando insieme nella nostra piccola sala prove a casa. Ci piacerebbe poter tornare in tour di nuovo e non appena sarà possibile tornare a farlo in sicurezza saremo di nuovo all’estero, a suonare dal vivo. Per il momento stiamo lavorando al progetto di un tour teatrale per l’Australia, che probabilmente avrò luogo entro la fine dell’anno e speriamo di essere di nuovo in viaggio in un futuro non troppo lontano.

We live in a historical moment in which we got used to isolation, this album has been a precious occasion of contact and collaboration with many other artists. How did the idea come about?
We’re still big believers in the album and often try and conceptualize ideas and creativity within our music when we begin work on another album. Our lead singer Sam had written a bunch of new songs for our upcoming record but felt that the songs he had written lent themselves to duets with female vocalists. He was writing lyrics and melodies with female vocalists in mind which we hoped would be apart of the recording process.
While on tour in Europe in 2019 we came up with a dream list of female vocalists who we loved and respected and who we thought would work well with certain songs on the new record, we reached out to those artists and asked if they would like to be apart of our new album.We weren’t sure if the album was going to be possible for us to do due to Covid19 and the challenge of a collaborative record was uncharted territory for us.
We recorded all the instruments in Melbourne at our producer Tom Iansek’s studio.
Due to limitations on people indoors we had to take it in turns going into the studio to record different parts. Most of the female lead vocals were done remotely in home studios and bounced into each session for mixing. The collaborative nature of the album was one we hadn’t done before but we’re very happy we reached out to these female artists and have them sing on each track. It was a privilege to create with them all.
Where does the title “Roses” come from?
The concept behind the title of the Album “Roses” was to acknowledge these different artists from around the world all spreading beauty in their own way. The album has a romantic late night vibe and the idea and image of a mysterious red rose seemed to resonate and captured the essence of the record.
How did you find and choose the artists to play with? Did you know them before?
In 2019 we started working on this record, the idea being to find 10 artists and create an album of duets. While on tour in Poland we gathered together in a hotel meeting room and sat around a large table and began to dream of artists we’d love to work with and artists whose voices would work for each song. We intentionally chose artists who we all loved first and then narrowed it down to whose voice would work best for each song. It was then a matter of reaching out to each artist in hope that they would be interested in lending their voice to the project.
It did help that we did know some of these artists before asking them to be involved with the project. We have known New Zealand artist Lydia Cole for many years and we had crossed paths with a few of the other incredible artists while on tour over the years.
Each vocalist was chosen because each of them holds that unique power to not just sing but to move you so entirely with their voices.
You’ve had an intense live activity and have travelled a lot in so many different countries; we all know that this has been such a complicated year for live music, how are you living this moment? Are you planning any tour dates?
Over the years we’ve been extremely lucky to have been able to tour and play music to people that want to hear it in many different parts of the world. It has been a very complicated year for many touring artists and musicians. We have mostly spent the last twelve months recording “Roses” in our hometown of Melbourne and rehearsing together in our small shed/studio at home. We would love to be able to tour again and as soon as it is safe to do so we will be overseas again playing shows. For the time being we are working on a theatre tour concept for Australia which will likely take place later this year and hopefully we will be out on the road again in the not too distant future.
