Turin Brakes intervista

Torino, Milano, Bologna, Roma e Taranto…

English version

After the release of “Wide-Eyed Nowhere” we talked about the album, the way it was born and its meanings. Now that you’re on tour, what kind of response are the new songs getting in the live dimension?

The best thing I read after a show was a review saying the new material flowed like it had always been in the set and the audience didn’t lose attention. That’s how it feels onstage too. The album seems to have made the fans happy which makes us happy.

Torino, Milano, Bologna, Roma e Taranto… It’s very nice that in April you can travel along our entire peninsula. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for not stopping only in the north; it’s splendid that you’ll touch the central-south, too often mistreated by the tours of foreign artists. Was it also possible because of the support of your Italian fan-base?

Yes we knew that southern Italy can sometimes miss out on tours and we have the same attitude in the UK, we take it to the people… not just the usual towns but we try to go outside where the audiences appreciate the effort and we learn more about everything. Our guests Dog Byron help us a lot with these ideas too.

How does the ideal set-list come about, for Turin Brakes? Do you vary often, depending on the place, or do you tend to stick to a standard choice?

Once we like a set we stay with it mostly. It never feels old, every audience is different and the same songs feel different every night. Our sets feel like a ladder taking us all to a higher place for the evening and we don’t want to mess with our ladder.

Counting that the five Italian dates will be one after the other, without breaks, I imagine you won’t be able to carve out some time to visit the italian beauties. Has there been a place over the years, that you have madly wanted to see but, due to the timing of the tour, you haven’t been able to visit?

This is life as a musician. We’ve been all over the world many times and yet seen very little of it! But this time we are having a short break after the tour for a few days in the south so we can enjoy Italy one of our favourite countries.

The words and the Lyric Video of “World Like That” demonstrate a great sensitivity towards the climatic situation of the planet. Are you able to remain “low environmental impact” even on tour?

We try to travel by train as much as we can. We will do this in Italy and we did this all over Germany and Netherlands recently too. We prefer it and maybe it helps the planet just a tiny bit.

If you had to use one word to describe Rob Allum and Eddie Myer (one word each), which would it be?

For Rob I’d describe him as Captain. For Ed I’d say Oracle.

Rob is the driving force behind making the band function, without him we probably would have crashed by now. Ed has the most hungry brain I’ve ever known. He absorbs history and facts like a sponge and entertains us on long journeys by explaining this confusing existence. Many of my lyrics have come from conversations on trains or in cars with the band.

A soloist with whom you would like to share a tour? And a band?

Laura Marling, I just love her. I’d like to tour with Neil Young and Crazy Horse too.

Well, I can’t wait for April 21st to enjoy your performance in Rome, at the Alcazar-Live. Have you, by chance, prepared some unexpected gift for the capital’s set-list?

The main thing I will be doing is trying not to fall off the back of the stage like I did a few years ago in Rome, that will be my gift!
