Non c’è bisogno di presentare i Tygers, giusto? Alfieri della NWOBHM, ma molto di più: band capace di rinnovarsi, guardare avanti, senza tradire i propri valori musicali. Ho il grande piacere di incontrare Robb Weir, fondatore e leader della band, dopo il concerto a Pistoia del tour promozionale per il nuovo album “Live Blood”, e finiamo a parlare per ore di tutto di più. Sono le due di notte, il giorno dopo i Tygers suoneranno a Milano, e con Robb decidiamo che l’intervista la faremo via mail; eccola giunta fresca in redazione.
Il 26 aprile avete pubblicato il nuovo album dal vivo “Live Blood”. Per quelli di noi che sono cresciuti con la musica degli anni ’70 e ’80, gli album dal vivo hanno sempre occupato un posto particolare all’interno di ogni discografia, spesso un momento per celebrare o chiudere un ciclo, a volte rivelandosi i migliori album pubblicati da una band. Che cosa significa per voi questo album, con quale spirito lo avete creato e con quali aspettative?
Questo album è la prima registrazione dal vivo di Jack Meille con i Tygers da quando è entrato a far parte del gruppo, poco più di 20 anni fa! Quindi penso che sia atteso da tempo, ma anche che sia un tempismo perfetto. L’album è stato registrato in uno dei nostri locali preferiti, il “Patriot” di Crumlin, nel Galles meridionale. Abbiamo registrato l’intero spettacolo dal vivo, senza alcun extra in studio. Possiamo metterci una mano sul cuore e dire al mondo che questa è una vera registrazione dal vivo, one take, e ne siamo estremamente orgogliosi. La registrazione è stata inviata a Tue Madsen in Danimarca che l’ha mixata (Tue ha prodotto e mixato il nostro attuale album in studio, “Bloodlines”) e masterizzata. Nel corso degli anni i nostri fan ci hanno sempre chiesto un album dal vivo ed eccolo qui….
“Bloodlines”, l’ultimo album in studio, ha avuto un enorme successo, è un punto di arrivo o solo un passo per i nuovi Tygers?
A essere onesti, credo che si tratti di entrambe le cose. Ogni volta che si produce un nuovo prodotto, che sia un LP, un CD o un video, si vuole che superi il precedente e con “Bloodlines” credo che la “nuova linfa” nella band abbia sicuramente migliorato il songwriting, rendendo l’album più rock. Siamo già a metà della stesura del prossimo disco e il nuovo materiale migliora sempre di più.
“Bloodlines” vi ha aperto anche alla partecipazione a concerti enormi e anche speciali, come la crociera caraibica “70.000 Tons of Metal” e il festival “Summer Breeze” in Brasile. Ci puoi parlare di queste esperienze?
Quest’anno siamo molto impegnati con gli spettacoli dal vivo per promuovere “Live Blood”. Finora abbiamo suonato su una nave da crociera heavy metal in navigazione da Miami alla Repubblica Dominicana, al festival “Summer Breeze” di San Paolo, in Brasile, in un tour italiano (il nostro resoconto), in un tour nel Regno Unito e sto scrivendo questo articolo mentre sono in aereo per l’Ungheria, la Croazia e la Serbia! Adoro andare in tour, è portare la nostra musica direttamente ai fan e quando siamo in giro incontriamo sempre persone meravigliose.
Ma i Tygers sono molto fedeli ai loro fan, e quindi continuate a fare concerti ovunque indipendentemente dalle dimensioni, diciamo che il successo di “Bloodlines” non vi ha distaccato dalla realtà e dall’affetto verso il pubblico, giusto?
Assolutamente no! Dai rock club alle arene dei festival, ogni singola esibizione è importante e a volte i concerti più piccoli si rivelano i più grandi!
Ora siete una band italiana per 2/5, questo vi ha mai creato problemi a livello logistico e gestionale? Avete un quartier generale dove vi incontrate quando necessario per testare o lavorare su nuove idee o ora fate tutto a distanza?
Penso che se i membri della band vivono in paesi diversi (nel nostro caso in tre luoghi diversi, Toscana, Sardegna e Regno Unito) è inevitabile che si creino problemi logistici. Posso solo dire che, insieme al nostro agente e al nostro manager, li pianifichiamo e li gestiamo prima che diventino un ostacolo. Il nostro terreno comune credo sia il Regno Unito per le prove, ma il nuovo materiale viene normalmente condiviso via etere tra di noi!
I Tygers sono una band letteralmente rinata dalle proprie ceneri, un processo di crescita continua con album sempre più convincenti e un lavoro di squadra che sembra aver raggiunto un equilibrio ottimale con l’arrivo alla casa discografica Mighty Music. Una solida reputazione live ormai assicurata e una grande capacità di produrre dischi sempre interessanti vi contraddistinguono. Quali sono i progetti futuri?
Siamo in tour per tutto l’anno con un paio di pause in cui condivideremo le nostre idee per il nuovo materiale e inizieremo il processo di demo. Credo che le registrazioni del nuovo disco inizieranno più avanti nel corso dell’anno, con l’obiettivo di uscire alla fine del 2025. Foto, video, registrazioni e concerti dal vivo… e così via, mi piace!
Cosa ne pensi del fatto che gruppi nati quasi 50 anni fa o più siano ancora in circolazione con risultati sorprendenti, l’ultimo album dei Judas Priest ne è forse la prova recente più eclatante. Sembra che per molti gruppi storici i giorni del pensionamento siano ancora molto lontani, nonostante le realtà di successo del Pop e del Rock in generale si dimostrino effimere e dal futuro incerto…
Questo dimostra che la grande musica non scompare mai, ma solo matura e migliora. Ho fondato i Tygers 46 anni fa e anno dopo anno sento che la band sta migliorando sempre di più, il che dimostra la potenza della nostra scrittura di canzoni, la spinta ad andare avanti e la nostra capacità di adattarci ai tempi. “Live Blood” è uscito ora se qualcuno vuole rivivere il nostro live set, ma vi avverto che potrebbe farvi saltare la testa….

You have released a new live album “Live Blood” on April 26th. For those of us who grew up with the music of the 70s and 80s, live albums have always occupied a particular place within each discography, often a moment to celebrate or close a cycle, sometimes proving to be the best albums released by a band. What does this album mean to you, in what spirit did you create it and with what expectations?
This album is Jack Meille’s first live recording with the Tygers since he joined the band a little over 20 years ago! So I think it’s long overdue but also, perfect timing. The album was recorded at one of our favourite venues, the “Patriot” in Crumlin, South Wales. We recorded the whole show as a live take with absolutely no after show studio extra’s. We can put our hand on our heart and say to the world this IS a true, live, one take recording and we are extremely proud of this. The recording was sent off to Tue Madsen in Denmark who mixed it (Tue produced and mixed our current studio album, “Bloodlines”) and mastered it. We have been asked constantly over the years by our fans for a live album and here it is….
“Bloodlines”, the latest studio album, has had enormous success, is it a point of arrival, or just a step for the new Tygers?
I think it’s both to be honest. Every time you produce a new product whether it be an LP, CD or video you want it to surpass the last one and with “Bloodlines” I think the ‘new blood’ in the band definitely enhanced the songwriting making the album rock just that bit harder. We are already halfway through writing for the next record and the new material just gets better and better.
“Bloodlines” also opened you up to participation in huge and even special concert venues, such as the “70,000 Tons of Metal” Caribbean Cruise and “Summer Breeze” festival in Brazil. Can you tell us about these experiences?
We are very busy this year with live shows to promote “Live Blood” so far this year we have played on a heavy metal cruise ship sailing from Miami to the Dominican Republic, “Summer Breeze” festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, an Italian tour (our report), a UK tour and I’m writing this while on a plane to Hungary then Croatia and Serbia! I love touring, it’s taking our music directly to the fans and we meet such wonderful people all the time when we are on the road.
But Tygers are very loyal to their fans, and so you continue to do concerts everywhere regardless of size, let’s say that the success of “Bloodlines” hasn’t detached you from reality and affection towards the public, right?
Absolutely not! From rock clubs to festival arenas, every single performance is important and sometimes the smaller concerts turn out to be the biggest shows!
You are now a 2/5 Italian band, has this ever created problems for you on a logistical and management level? Do you have a headquarters where you meet when necessary to test or work on new ideas or do you now do everything remotely?
I think if you have band members living in different countries (in our case three different locations, Tuscany, Sardinia and the UK) it inevitably can cause logistical problems. All I can say is along with our agent and band manager we forward plan and manage them before they become a hindrance. Our common ground I guess would be the UK to rehearse but new material is normally shared over the airwaves between us!
Tygers are a band literally reborn from their ashes, a continuous growth process with increasingly convincing albums and a team work that seems to have reached an optimal balance with the arrival at Mighty Music record company. A solid live reputation now assured and a great ability to produce always interesting records distinguish you. What are the future plans?
We are touring all this year with a couple of breaks where we will share our ideas for new material and start the demo process. I expect recording of the new record will commence later this year with a view to releasing late 2025. Photos, videos, recording and playing live… and so it goes on, I love it!
What do you think of the fact that bands born almost 50 years ago or more are still around with surprising results, Judas Priest’s latest album is perhaps the most striking recent proof. It seems that for many historic bands the days of retirement are still very far away despite successful realities in Pop and Rock in general which prove to be ephemeral and with an uncertain future…
Well that just shows that great music never goes away, it only matures and gets better. I started the Tygers 46 years ago and year after year I feel the band is getting better and better, which just goes to prove to power of our song writing, the drive to move forward and our ability to adapt with the times. “Live Blood” is out now if anyone wants to re-live our live set, but be warned it might blow your head off…
